The Broadmeadows Disability Services Board of Management and CEO work together to monitor and enhance service delivery and corporate aspects of the organisation.
The seven voluntary Members of the Board and CEO meet monthly and are supported by two sub-committees which focus on Finance and Transport management.
Introducing our Board Members:
Sue Binger - Chairperson
Michael Grech
My first involvement with this organisation was twenty five years ago when my daughter started attending the Congram Street junior school. About the same time I started serving on the Committee of Management initially as a councilor and later as president of the Broadmeadows Helping Hand Association, which was the name of the organisation prior to becoming BDS in more recent years. For several years I was a delgate to the state's Helping Hand Association Victoria and until recently I also served as a school councilor of Hume Valley Special School. I have lived and worked in the Hume municipality for many years. As well as my daughter, my wife and I also have three adult sons.
Rhonda Hunter
I joined the BDS Board after a successful career in Special Education both as a teacher and Principal. Having worked in the Broadmeadows area for many years, I am familiar with our local community and can continue to contribute to addressing the needs and aspirations of our members. Recently I have contributed as a member of the National Disability Services (NDS) working party developing and reviewing Good Governance for Boards of Management. I look forward to continuing my contributions as part of the vibrant and innovative, ongoing growth and development at BDS.
Bruce McCurry
I joined the BDS membership ranks after the Day Program visited another venue where I work voluntarily, the Diamond Valley Miniature Railway. I was amazed at the community-based work of BDS, and subsequently nominated for, and was elected to, a vacant Board position in 2007. My motivation as a Board member is simply to support the staff in developing direction for the Centre, and to support the use of good management practices in the Centre's operation. I have lived in the Essendon area for about 45 years, these days with my wife and two young-adult children. My day job is in Altona, where I work as a chemical engineer at the petrochemical complex. Over the years I have volunteered for other Community groups in the western suburbs, all with the aim of improving things at the grass roots level.
Carmela Lombardo
I was asked to join the board of BDS about 10 or 11 years ago. At that time the centre was known as the Broadmeadows Helping Hand Association. During the time I have been on the Board I have seen the Association become a Company limited by guarantee and grow in many ways. I have seen the programs offered increase from just Day Program and Escapade to include RASP, Home First and the Outreach Program. As the parent/carer of a member at BDS I was very interested in being involved as I thought this would be a way of contributing and also of being able to voice my opinion and concerns. I have learnt a great deal about what goes on in the background of such an organisation and some of the decisions (sometimes difficult ones) that have to be made. I have also been involved in some Board Development Courses and have learnt a great deal about the responsibilities of a Company Board. I have enjoyed my time on the Board and hope to be able to continue serving on the Board in the future.
George Zamola - Vice
I have been working with Victorian Government for 28 years, and served as chairperson of the North West Community Road Safety Council for 10 years. I have a son who attends BDS and saw an opportunity to contribute to the BDS community by becoming a board member so that I could use my life experiences to help make a difference.
